High Dynamic Range imaging
HDR, which is the abbreviation of high dynamic range is a variety of new technique which will be certainly revolutionizing the effect of digital scenes. Almost all aspects of imaging process will be changed by this transformation: image producing, including capture, storage and output. You will enjoy the benefits that provided by HDR during every above process. HDR imaging can replicate the tonal range available in the real life.
Merits of HDR imaging
Recently, HDR technology has been applied to the field such as films, animation and virtual reality industries. Other areas, such like medical treatment, computer games can apply to this technology as well. Utilizing HDR imaging, graphic computer objects can be easily turned into images in real shots. As photographic technologies continue to enhance, the greatest utilization for HDR imaging will most likely end up being consumer photography.
Capture
Shot at least three images of the same scene with different exposures, which is the most used way for photographers to capture the high dynamic range images. Using a tripod to take the photos is strongly advized during capture procedure. Or merely take them randomly and align the pictures with the help of some specialized program, such as HDR Darkroom, which the algorithm of alignment is fantastic. After taking enough images, then import these scenes into professional software that you have selected. Combine them together into one single high dynamic range image and continue to carry through the so named tone mapping procedure to make your picture meet your expectation.
Storage
You can store your HDR shot with formats such as JPEG, GIF, HDR, TIFF or many others which provide only 8 bits per color channel for tonal range. However, 16 bits per channel is offered by some newer formats such as JPEG2000, RAW,and PNG format.
Output
Import your images into professional program, align, combine and tone map, you can now export and save your scenes after these process. That is the picture you expected.
In the next decade, HDR imaging technology will revolutionize the style photos are stored, manipulated, used, and displayed forever. And the development of imaging technique will never cease.
