Improved Fuel Economy Tips – One Tip Saves Gas And Your Health
Due to high fuel prices, no one wants to be a gas waster. But even without thinking about it, most people actually DO squander lots of fuel. But this is a fuel-saving tip that you will not find anywhere else, and it hits the nail on the head:
Our bad gas mileage and thoughtless wastefulness is because of the fact that we’re frequently in a hurry. And when you are in a rush, you do not even think about saving gas: You hop inside your car or truck without warming it up, and drive like a maniac to get to where you need to go on time – or at the very least, only slightly late.
Therefore, the single biggest thing that you can do to save money and gas will be to allow yourself an extra ten minutes – at the very least – to arrive at your destination. If you plan it like this, in reality 95% of the time you will end up leaving and/or arriving on time (as opposed to 10 – 15 minutes early). The reason? The traffic will be heavier than you expected, you’ll need to dash back into your place for an item you forgot, a last-second distraction may hit you which needs your attention, etc. and etc.
In any case, that extra ten or so minutes will invariably prove useful. But the advantages of getting to where you need to go on time are only the tip of the ‘benefit iceberg: You will be moving and traveling relaxed – no need to hurry – so your blood pressure will be lower. This makes you happier and healthier – quite literally. And let’s not forget the better fuel mileage, which saves you big bucks over the month, and helps save planet earth.
Following is a list of specific tips and techniques:
1. Refrain from speeding, quick acceleration and hard braking – “agressive driving, which all result from being in a rush! Aggressive driving can lower your gas mileage as much as 34 percent at highway speeds and by five percent around town.
2. Refrain from long periods of idling as a way to warm up a cold engine. Rather, warm your engine for around 30 seconds and after that drive slowly for a few blocks or so. . This technique warms up the transmission and other parts of the vehicle that need gradual warming along with the engine. These other ‘non-engine’ components need gradual warming as well.
Long periods of idling do nothing but waste gas as well as place considerable amounts of cabon monoxide and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
3. Combine several short outings into one longer one. Because several short trips use up to twice as much fuel as one longer, multi-purpose errand trip.
4. Slow down! Avoid driving over sixty or so miles per hour as much as possible.
….Look at these facts:
For every 5 mph above 60 mph you pay an extra fifteen cents for each gallon of gasoline – perhaps more depending on fuel prices today. But it works out to be around twelve to eighty-five cents per gallon of gas you stand to save! This is astonishing but it is correct.
The reason for this radical savings (or loss) is due to the fact that close to 85 percent (85%) of your engine’s power is needed to combat wind resistence at speeds above sixty five miles per hour. And this is true even for ’slick vehicles,’ with low coefficients of drag.
5. Refrain from using your vehicle’s air conditioning at speeds below 30 mph. The explanation for this is your a/c compressor robs lots of power from the engine, however the negative effects diminish a great deal at constant freeway speeds.
6. Keep your tires inflated to the proper pressure – and aligned as well – for an overall fuel mileage improvement of around 3.4 %.
7. Get the junk out of your trunk! A lighter vehicle uses less fuel, which you already likely knew. I realize, however that if it is ‘out of sight it’s out of mind.’ Yet getting rid of extra weight merely sitting inside your trunk is an easy way to improve your mileage.
These things are easy to do and will save you lots of money on your next tank of gas. Equally as vital, perhaps, is that you will help reduce America’s reliance on foreign oil while helping save your natural environment.
But don’t forget the biggest single thing that will help you arrive on time alive and tranquil, with extra cash in your wallet and helping preserve the planet:
Depart 10 minutes earlier every single time!
