Early Fire Detection Saves Lives
Every year in the United States, there are more than half a million home fires reported to the fire department. Property losses from home fires cost victims $4 billion dollars annually! That’s a lot of money, and it could be less if fire departments were alerted earlier so they could put the fire out before so much damage occurred.
Property damage isn’t the only cost related to residential fires. Each year, more than 4,000 people die in home fires.
Most die of smoke inhalation, which is the second leading cause of accidental death in the home. Thousands more are injured and hospitalized.
Smoke detectors save lives, but they are only good enough if people hear them immediately and respond. What if you’re sleeping and don’t hear the alarm?
What if the batteries wore out, or the power went out and the alarm didn’t go off? Give yourself and your family an extra layer of protection by installing a fire detection system along with your home security system.
When the smoke detector installed with your home security system sounds off, the dispatch center is alerted to a possible emergency. They then try to contact you by telephone. If you don’t answer, they contact the fire department and emergency personnel on your behalf, who go to your house to deal with the emergency – and possibly, save your life.
When you’re not at home, you can protect your kids and elderly or disabled loved ones with a fire detection alarm in your home security system. You taught your kids that the first rule if there’s a fire is to get out of the house – then call 911. A properly armed security system takes care of calling 911 for you.
Many fires that result in total destruction of the home happen when there’s no one at home to call emergency services. Use candles and supplemental heat sources safely. Check the kitchen carefully when you’re done cooking. Stop smoking cigarettes for an abundance of reasons. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer, and you usually don’t even know it’s there until you’re so sick you need to call an ambulance.
Your home security system can be improved by adding fire detection and carbon monoxide alarms. The dispatch center will know before you do that there’s a problem, and emergency personnel will be called immediately. Those precious minutes could save your life.
